Dianthus carthusianorum , or Carthusian carnation is a perennial plant, has delicate pink flowers on long, slender stems. The slender stems carry dark pink flowers. The plant was introduced by the Carthusian monks, who used them to make soap (saponins in the plant). This carnation has an understated charm and fits well in natural gardens. Flowers from June to September. Remove faded flowers to prolong the flowering period.
Sowing can be done directly in the open ground from May or pre-sowing from April.
It is native to Western and Southern Europe and grows well in dry, poor, calcareous soil in full sun.
