Papaver nudicaule
'Ballerina Mix'
The Papaver nudicaule 'Ballerina Mix' , or Icelandic poppy, is a graceful and colourful biennial plant that is often grown as an annual; the young plants do not tolerate too much moisture in the winter, so that biennial plants also prefer to overwinter in a cold greenhouse. With its silky petals in shades of white, yellow, orange and red, this flower is a real eye-catcher. The flowers grow on long, thin stems and have a striking soft glossy appearance.
This poppy is ideal for border planting or adding colour accents to rock gardens. It also does well in pots and as a cut flower.
Sow direct in early spring or late autumn in a sunny spot. The seeds need light to germinate, so cover them lightly with soil.
Papaver nudicaule likes well-drained, sandy soil and a sunny spot. It thrives in cold climates and flowers from late spring to summer.
This poppy is native to the northern temperate regions of Asia and North America, including areas with alpine landscapes.
