Althaea officinalis 'Marsh mallow'

marsh Mallow

The marsh mallow plant, known scientifically as Althaea officinalis, is a stately plant with soft, hairy, gray-green leaves that are broad, triangular to oval in shape, and delicate, light pink to almost white flowers with fine veins. It naturally grows in moist (salty) grasslands and along riverbanks in Europe and Western Asia. The plant is particularly known for its long history as a medicinal herb: the roots and leaves contain mucilage, a gelatinous substance that is soothing and anti-inflammatory, making it beneficial for treating coughs, sore throats, and digestive issues. They also have historical significance in confectionery, as the roots were used to make the sweet treat we now know as marshmallows, which were originally made by mixing the root tea with sugar and egg whites. All parts of the plant are edible. The leaves and flowers can be used in salads, and the roots can be made into a delicious herbal tea.
In the garden, it combines a calm, natural appearance with ecological value and attracts pollinators.

voorzaaien
