The Amaranthus hypochondriacus , or simply Amaranth, are impressive plants with large decorative, upright stems that flower from July to October. They also provide impressive material for flower arrangements, in rich colours: 'RED PYGMY' is a low form (40-60 cm) with thick dark red upright inflorescences. Originally, Amaranth was the staple food of the ancient Incas (the seed contains proportionally more proteins than our known cereals...). Its unique texture adds drama to the garden. Ideal for borders, cut flowers and dried bouquets. It is also edible; the seeds and leaves are used in the kitchen.
